New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Kate Spade review

A Chelsea loft was transformed into a garden tea party for Kate Spade’s spring 2014 collection shown Friday morning at New York Fashion Week, complete with a faux grass path to stroll, and bite-sized quail eggs benedict to nibble on.

The inspiration: “Places to Go, People to See” was the title creative director Deborah Lloyd gave to the collection, which was inspired by strolling the gardens and streets in Capri, Monaco, Giverny and other European locales.

The look: Ladylike lemon prints; black-and-white, ‘60s inspired grids and stripes; and Monet florals on everything from pencil skirts to full-skirt dresses, leggings to tennis sweaters; clutch purses made to look like book covers; and a great beauty look to try at home: white cat eyeliner.

The verdict: Escapist frills that could have been more transporting.
