N.Y. Fashion Week: At Michael Kors, return of the rich hippie

Michael Kors has the best one-liners in all of fashiondom to describe his inspirations. This season’s? “Big Sur, Big City.”

The combination amounted to a terrific collection of haute slouch wear, including a tie-dye mink coat, and cashmere sweat pants that had us California dreamin’ on a winter’s day.

Kors brought back the peasant blouse, that rich hippie staple, in white silk georgette, pairing it with an ultra-luxe gray broadtail fur peasant skirt that had to be seen to believed. He also showed shimmering one-sleeve peasant dresses in metallic fil coupé that were glorious.

The new suit had culottes on the bottom and a relaxed belted jacket on top. And skirt hemlines were long, anchored by rugged clogs or sandals on the feet.

Kors is a master at chunky knits, and this season’s show piece was an ombre Aran pullover worn over a chocolate suede fringe skirt.

The fringe was also flying on handbags, a suede coat and a sequin skirt that was earth mama-meets-flapper.

But as earthy as the collection was, there were a lot of remarkably fine details, such as the spotted feathers sewn onto a charming gray flannel fit ‘n’ flare dress, and the tiny leather flowers dotting a circle skirt.

Another collection to add to his hit parade.
