‘Frozen’ singalong heading back to Hollywood’s El Capitan (again)

Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre is due for a cold snap in the form of Disney’s hit animated musical “Frozen,” which will return in a special singalong version beginning Aug. 20.

The screenings, which run through Sept. 16, will feature live performers singing onstage as Elsa and Olaf (the characters voiced by Idina Menzel and Josh Gad in the movie, respectively), artificial snow inside the theater, and a follow-up presentation of the short film “Frozen Fever.”

The El Capitan engagement, which reprises a similar run from last year, comes as the latest example of Disney capitalizing on the “Frozen” phenomenon.

Released in 2013 and loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “Snow Queen” fairy tale, “Frozen” is the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, with more than $1.27 billion at the worldwide box office. It won two Oscars, for animated movie and original song, and spawned a hit soundtrack, a merchandising craze and a touring ice show.

Disney is also developing a “Frozen” stage adaptation and a big-screen sequel.
